Mexican flag carrier AeroMexico has announced it will launch direct flights between Mexico City and Barcelona starting this summer. The route will commence on 15 June 2019, operating three times a week with Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft.
Flights from Mexico City will depart on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 18:20 local time. They will arrive in Barcelona the following day at 12:40, after an approximately eight-hour flight.
Return flights from Barcelona to Mexico City are scheduled on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, with departure from Barcelona’s El Prat Airport at local time 14:40. Flights will arrive in Mexico City at local time 19:55
AM037 MEX 1820 – 1240(+1) BCN 788 (Tues, Thurs, Sat)
AM038 BCN 1440 – 1955 MEX 788 (Wed, Fri, Sun)
In addition to the direct Barcelona route, AeroMexico announced that it will increase the number of weekly flights to Madrid at 18 flights and to Paris Charles de Gaulle to 11 weekly flights.
Emirates to enter Mexican market?
Currently, there is no other carrier operating the Mexico – Barcelona direct flight, though Emirates has expressed interest in launching the route under a Dubai – Barcelona – Mexico City schedule. Last year, AeroMexico threated legal action against the Gulf airline, accusing it of unfair competition due to state subsidies.
Emirates eventually dropped that plan in September, having failed to secure daily slots at Mexico City. In a new turn of events, however, the airline was recently granted the required permission to operate the route after all, placing Dubai – Barcelona – Mexico City back on the table.
